G+_Ben Schorr
Your firewall might be blocking ping but passing FTP. Can you FTP to the device from outside?
G+_Paul Birch
I have turned firewall to my mac & to the router, & I have been using http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to try the port but with both firewalls r off & still port is closed

G+_Dan Phillips
If you can't ping something then that means that ICMP packets are being blocked somewhere. However you don't need to have an IP reply to a ping to be able to connect to it. Does the NAS have some kind of interface? I know on Windows you can use NETSTAT and TELNET to test ports, not sure what you would do on a Mac.
G+_Paul Birch
yes the nas used a web interface. yes I have netstat & more eg ping traceroute etc

G+_Jason Honingford
Can you connect to the FTP server locally? I noticed that one of your scans showed SSH, which is the port you would use for SFTP. Maybe you have SFTP on and not FTP? Also you're sure you have your public IP address correct.... G+_Paul Birch
ok the sftp port is open. So I need to know now how for others to connect to the server over the net using sftp? Thankyou for you help
G+_Jason Honingford
They need an SSH client. Bitvise has a free non-commercial use client. SFTP is one of the things you can do over the SSH connection. Not to be confused with FTP over SSL.
G+_Paul Birch
Thankyou Do you know a web-site where people can go instead of downloading software?
G+_Jason Honingford
Not for general annonymous users. They have to associate SSH to a client on their computer. There must be a way to switch it to FTP instead of SFTP on the buffalo device
G+_Paul Birch
yes the nas can use both but my router won't open port
G+_Paul Birch
Will it be worth buying a lan/switch? As I remember you can do much more with a switch?
G+_Jason Honingford
The router should perform all you need. The switch really just gives you more LAN ports to plug in more devices. Focus on UDP port 21 forwarding to the IP address of the buffalo, or see if the buffalo can use a different port for FTP, any unused port will do, then you go to ftp://X.X.X.X:12345 in IE to access it. Try upgrading the 615 firmware. Check out the support forums.
