G+_Scot McSweeney-Roberts
Just watching the episode on Handbrake and a question popped into my mind - if you're using VLC to do the ripping, why not use VLC's built in transcoding and skip Handbrake entirely? G+_iyaz akhtar
Richard Lyon on Mac, MacTheRipper. On Windows DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter. These are old programs I've had for a long time.
G+_Cole Brodine
If you don't mind paying money for software to decode DVD and Bluray you can try AnyDVD. I bought it a while back to rip my movie collection with. It is one of the few that I've found to reliably decode Blurays. Edit: It just decrypts. You still need Handbrake or something to rip/encode. G+_Matthew Dougherty
If you don't mind paying for software, dvdNextCopy works great. I've been using it for about 7 years now and with updates it hasn't failed me yet. It does DVD's and Blu-ray. It will use a 3rd party program like VLC to decrypt, but it does everything else.
