G+_610GARAGE
I just watched the latest episode and I was wondering if somebody could confirm something. The Bloodhound SSC has an 800hp fuel pump?! That just seems crazy. I think most car fuel pumps could barely muster a hp. Granted, a car engine and a rocket are completely different, but still, thats a big fuel pump. Also, the tires will be rotating at 10,000 rpm, Yikes. I bet there well balanced, at least I hope so. :) I wonder if the wheel bearings use a special type of grease. Heck, I wonder what they use for wheel bearings.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Liquid fuel rocket engines will usually have a smaller rocket engine inside that burns fuel and turns a turbine just to pressurize the fuel. It takes A LOT of power to drive enough fuel/oxidizer to the engine. :)
G+_610GARAGE
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Interesting. I guess there's extremely high flow rate at high pressures. But now I'm wondering why they chose to use a V-8 rather than a small turbine. I would think that would be lighter. This is the only thing I hate about these types of stories. It just gives me a bunch of questions that would love to ask the engineers of the car. :)
G+_610GARAGE
Wayne Hobbins Thats a good point. I guess they could be using the V8 as throttle control, which would be pretty cool. :)
