G+_Richard Sequeira
Would like to hear what Leo and TWiT pundits think about this. On the positive side, perhaps now leaders of all countries will start vetoing patent decisions when it impacts national interests. This will then render patents useless as a competitive edge. G+_Sao Paulo Boco
This will only happen if the ban is on a US company. How about vetoeing the ban on Samsung phones and tablets.?
G+_Greg M
Exactly my feeling. Do not agree with an international organization of which your county is a member no problem simply veto their decision. The problem is that this type of action can come back to bite US companies who get decisions against say European based company. The company just gets their political official to veto the decision and allow them to continue to sell their products in their country. It will be a free for all. G+_Zulhaimi Abdul Hamid
Yup. This action sets a dangerous precedent. But like I said, if you've had enough of patent wars, you'd be glad that this could be the beginning of the end. To paraphrase Yoda (for added drama) - "Begun this patent war, has!" G+_Blake DeVoss
This is purely beneficial to large companies with wide user bases. Don't expect this kind of treatment for smaller or less popular companies who don't have the president's attention.
G+_Tony Elliott
Sounds a bit biased and elete to me. Didn't Samsung legally get that import ban? Very similar to Apples ban on Samsung in Australia and Europe. Does that mean the President has 'broken' the law. As in all buggered up...
G+_Matt Molloy
Apple is one if the worst patent trolls out there. Veto all patents the system is broken anyway.
G+_Scott Meister
But no one in the government stopped Apple from "inventing" the rectangle & gaining a patent for it. Remember when the iPad came out & how they "invented" the rectangle shape it comes in? They wanted to sue every maker of a tablet that comes in a rectangular form. /how soon we forget! G+_Tony Elliott
The patents that have been awarded to Apple have stopped innovation and only helped fill the coffers of Apple and their shareholders. Apple haven't done anything wrong, the system has let us down. ? Scott Meister oh the rectangles are those them there right angle thingamagimmies? 90° at the corners? That was sheer genius. ? G+_John Clark
So will small companies also get a pass from patent woes? Of course not. I don't think the ban is appropriate because I don't think all the patents they're based on are appropriate. But if we're going to have stupid laws & treaties they should be enforced evenly. In this case a large company got a pass that smaller ones shouldn't expect.
G+_Paul Comeau
To be anal... Could somebody please provide info as to what the POTUS actually did? The only thing he can technically veto is legislation from congress. Last I checked the ITC is not congress... So is this an executive order to ignore the results or what? (Along with, what treaty obligations do we have regarding the ITC, and what gives the U.S. the ability to ignore an ITC decision.) Again I know I'm being picky, but before we discuss the ramifications it would be nice to know how these things work.
