G+_Michael Heinz
I've heard a couple of people recently ask why we spend money on space exploration. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2015/07/15/reality-check-trip-to-pluto-costs-less-than-vikings-stadium/
G+_Eddie Foy
Difference is ROI.
G+_Michael Heinz
Pretty much. Minnesota isn't going to see an ROI for their stadium but the space program has been paying dividends since the day it began.
G+_Eddie Foy
The benefactors are the corporations that can take advantage of of the 'discoveries' funded by the tax payers. You and I pay for it on both ends. (knowing there is water on planet/moon X if of no value)
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Science and knowledge is a value to itself. I truly believe in that... Saying, "we shouldn't do it because I don't see the ROI" when it pertains to space travel is, for me, the same as saying, "I don't care enough about the universe around me to do things that could change our understanding of our existence." -- I'll pay... will you? :)
G+_Michael Heinz
Eddie - also remember, it wasn't just the corporation who paid for the stadium, a lot of it was tax payers - and studies have shown that sports stadiums do NOT create a net economic benefit for their communities. G+_Michael Heinz
And, actually, there is value i knowing there's water on the moon - it makes it more likely we'll be able to live there.
