G+_Michael Heinz
So, I'm planning on converting a cigar humidor into a case for my Pi. The one thing that's stopping me is I'd like to line the cable access hole with a grommet similar to the ones you see on lots of modern desks, something like the ones in this link. The problem is that these are all huge in comparison to the size hole I actually need - which would only be a 1/2" or so in size. Anybody have any good ideas on an alternative? The wood is 3/8" thick. http://www.amazon.com/Black-Computer-Counter-Plastic-Grommets/dp/B00EZCUH16/ref=sr_1_2?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1449267945&sr=1-2&keywords=desk+grommet
G+_Michael Heinz
As a side note - I'd never heard of TinkerCad before I watched Episode 170 - it turned out really handy for this project, helping me visualize how the Pi would fit into the case while still leaving room for fat fingers to insert and remove cables... G+_Eddie Foy
Most well stocked hardware stores should have grommets. Just remember the connector size, not cable size when choosing. (gotta get it through)
G+_Michael Heinz
+Eddie Foy, yeah, the plan is to spend some time rummaging around in parts vins tomorrow. And, yeah, gotta be big enough to get the Ethernet cable thru.
G+_Eddie Foy
you could use a razor to slice it, but its kinda a kludge. One other thing to ponder is wall thickness. Most grommets are for thin sheet metal, not a slab of wood.
G+_Fuzzy Wuzzy
You could make a brass grommet with a bit of tubing, like this:
G+_Michael Heinz
I was looking for something more like these: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61H3Hgp4AAL._SL1100_.jpg
G+_Ben Reese
Here's a 1" in the design you're looking for: 1" Black Desk Grommet (5 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MLCNKW/ But like others recommend, I'd probably go with a rubber grommet like this: 125pc Rubber Grommet & Plug Assortment - Includes Solid Plugs - Automotive, Airplane, Marine Applications https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00552Q1P6/
G+_Michael Heinz
NICE! I wonder why that didn't show up when I searched for "desk grommet"? I've already actually built the case, but I never did find a good grommet for the rear hole (the front hole is a completely different issue) so I may pick up one or both of those to experiment with. G+_Michael Heinz
I'll post pix in a little while, right now I'm setting up an rsync backup process for it.
G+_Ben Reese
Not sure. I searched for "wire grommet", so could just be a difference of terms.
