Thank you for all the responses enjoyed reading them. What i want to find out before I buy is if the Pi2 and camera can function in the format of motion detection? I am excited about purchasing and will when I know the fit I am looking for is 1080P, FTP storage off site of PI2 and motion detection. My concerns as far as someone pointing a laser at the camera a not high on my list as they are small enough to conceal; in a outdoor lamp or other decorative item.

My comment was more of a joke given the recent bug found in the hardware. I've been blamed for bad jokes before. :D

ZoneMinder has been around a long time - I'm actually happily surprised to see development has continued. It supports configurable motion detection and a full admin. ZM was designed in an era where the cameras were analog connected to digitizer cards in a central server that would do all of the processing and storage. Last time I worked with it, MJPEG and MP4 streaming support was barely working.

If they've caught up to modern times, it would be interesting to see a self-contained capture/processing/storage unit which many embedded devices can definitely do.

I'm curious what other mature projects are out there that are better suited. This one is open source which is a plus. Hope that helps.

Adafruit did a motion sensor security deal in her learn section. You could get the motion sensor and then have it take a video or picture when it triggers. I used a webcam for my pi just to play around and it would stream but super lag. Was probably the webcam mainly. Had it wired into the network so not sure how WiFi would've done. I'm actually getting a b+ with the cam module today and one thing I was going to play with was the motion sensor triggering the camera. Sorry for the late reply.

Sounds like we are mostly all searching for the most up to date version of security camera set up for the PI2 with all the traits necessary for home security. I like the fact the pc board in small and low power on the PI2 and the camera is very small. After what you all have written I need to find out if the quality of the camera is 1080P, can it handle the streaming, can motion detection be incorporated and lastly can the video recorded be dumped to a secure FTP site?
