G+_Claude Gregoire
BAD NEWS!!!!!!! On my first flight this happened. The power just cut out and then came back on for a second just before it crashed. I am using the FlySky T6 radio. Do you guys think that this was the reason? It might have also been an issue with one of the motors which was damaged during a crash. I am prepared to rebuild it but I am wondering if I need to also upgrade my radio. I am thinking about getting Futaba 6J.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
I see the problem... Your antenna wire is threaded through the frame of the craft. That frame is an AIO frame/power distribution board. (i.e. it's got metal traces all through it.) The antenna cannot touch ANY surface that has metal. If it does, you will attenuate the signal, which causes the T6 receiver to shut down the motors. (Safety precaution... to prevent flyaways) Watch the coming episode of "KH" to see a good way to secure your antenna. -- Basically, I use a zip tie and some fasteners to hold the antenna away from the body in the proper orientation. G+_William Foster
Thank you for sharing... If that happened to me I would probably cry!!! But look at it this way. You are saving many of us from making the same mistake... Just wait I am sure I will make some more for all of us...
G+_Brent Burzycki
Like space flight... To advance you need failure....
G+_Steve Anderson
No model experience, but given the surroundings, may be worth checking the temperature ratings for the motors and electronics, and the temperature derating for the batteries. G+_Claude Gregoire
I don't think the motors overheated because I tested them afterwards at full speed. Thanks for the advice Father Robert. I should not have flown it quite so high on the first flight. It will be an $80 mistake. I will need a new frame and motors. Hope everyone else will learn from it. Feel free to put this on the show if you like.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
As long as you're getting a new frame, get yourself a "Alien-X" (the one we're building on the show now) it's less than $20 and can use the same arms as your current frame. (So you can just unscrew them from the old frame and connect them to the new frame.
G+_Claude Gregoire
I would but I don't want to pull all of the stuff off of the frame. The only thing I need is one new arm and four new motors. Plus all the ESC's are soldiered to the frame. The next time I fly it I am going to keep it near the ground at least for the first couple of flights. I am looking forward to your next build. I love these shows. Thanks for doing them. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Are you sure the motors are trashed? They can handle a pretty good impact. -- If you need a new set, get the EMAX 2213's from Ebay. Less than $60 delivered and they provide plenty of power. (Can even go 4s if you want a little speed in the future.) :)
G+_Claude Gregoire
Well all 4 motors are still spinning the problem is that the pin on the top is bent on two of them. I definitely am getting the EMAX this time. I have watched my crash video a ton of times and I am starting to wonder more and more if the power cut off was a range issue. The reason I am thinking this is because I have been running it at home and putting the antenna to the frame and I can't make it cut out like you suggested may have been the problem. Does it look like a short enough distance that it should not have cut off? There was a beep just as it cuts out. I also just finished watching episode 116 Quadcopter #2 about 11 minutes in where you say that you have a homing procedure on your Flysky that if it loses signal that it will back up till it requires a signal. I could not find this in the settings. If this is so could you please explain it? Thanks again for the feed back Claude
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
FlySky does NOT have that failsafe. It only has "shut off" when it goes out of range. My Futaba J6 has a failsafe that allows the craft to turn itself to the left in lazy circles until it requires signal.
