G+_Tony Gonzalez
Hey guys. Question. I have a wrt54g v1.20.5 I think. I want to install DD WRT, but failed terribly. Tried going through the GUI but router didn't take the update. This was after I did 30/30/30 does anyone have any ideas as to why it failed. Or can point me to the right direction. Thanks. G+_Paul Galati
What version of DD-WRT did you install first? If believe the Linksys firmware won't accept a firmware larger that 3MB, so install the micro version first. If that installs successfully, then reflash with the fuller featured version. Personally, I would recommend Tomato over DD-WRT. You would still need to flash DD-WRT micro first in any case. Good Luck.
G+_Tony Gonzalez
Paul Galati I didn't get that far. My router has software v1.02.2 and the installation steps said to update to version 4.2.2.1. Then flash did wrt mini, then standard. Tried going through the GUI w/ different browsers but no luck. Not a fan of DD WRT saw it on an old episode of know how and went with it. Just curious why do you prefer Tomato?
G+_Tony Gonzalez
But to answer your question. I was trying to flash v24-9517 vint and v24-9517 std right after. But couldn't install Linksys update 4.2.2.
G+_Paul Galati
Just to confirm, the DD-WRT instructions are requesting that you update the Linksys firmware to 4.2.2.1 before installing DD-WRT? Before proceeding, what is the revision of the hardware? On the bottom of the unit near the serial number, it should something like WRT54G v4 or similar. G+_Tony Gonzalez
Yes DD-WRT instructions are asking I upgrade the Linksys firmware. Hardware v5 is what is at the bottom of my router.
G+_Tony Gonzalez
I thought they meant firmware versions.

G+_Paul Galati
OK, unfortunately Linksys changed the hardware in version 5 and up. You cannot run Tomato but you can run DD-WRT. There is only 2MB of flash memory in v5. I think you might be reading the wrong directions based on the hardware version. Version 5 will require vx-prep to get the binary ready to upload to your router. <http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G_v5.0_%26_5.1_%26_6.0> Give these directions a look see and that should get you on your way. G+_Tony Gonzalez
I'll try it. Instructions look daunting but I'll manage. Thank you for your input. Sad I can run tomato, seems a lot easier.
G+_Paul Galati
I have a couple v6's that are running DD-WRT, have not needed a reboot in months. Yeah, I like Tomato's feature set over DD-WRT, but DD-WRT is much better than Linksys stock. Take it slow, you will be fine.
