G+_Adlai Allred
Jason Howell Ron Richards Gina Trapani All About Android After listening to this week's episode I am equally as excited for Google Now on Tap as everyone at AAA is. I do, however, have some concerns - at least on the hardware side. Let's use the Samsung's GS6 as an example. The GS6 uses it's physical "Home" button to summon Google Now. A double tap of the Home button starts the Camera app. Both of these are great and very useful features, but what about Now On Tap? How's that going to work? What are everyone's thoughts about how companies like Samsung and others who use physical Home buttons (are there any others?) will implement Google Now on Tap? Thanks and keep up the awesome work! G+_Joseph Cappellino
There inlies the problem. Google has been telling them for years to use software buttons. For example, the Nexus devices, swiping up from the navigation bar brings you directly into the Google Search app. To get around this, Samsung brings up a menu where you can select Google Search. Maybe they'll add a triple tap to open it or the camera, but that surfaces usability issues similar to the singular home button of iOS devices. G+_Adlai Allred
Joseph Cappellino Not the dreaded triple tap!!! What about implementing the “swipe up from home” gesture for Google Now and then just use the normal method for Google Now(on GS6) for Now On Tap? But you're right, Samsung has been pretty stubborn about the physical button issue. They are only boxing themselves in when they don't modernize their hardware 100%. They either won’t implement something like this or come up with some crazy way for it to work for users.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
I think, like the first go around with the addition of "swipe for Google" they did nothing. Long pressing home just brought up the recents list (as it did in previous versions). It wasn't until a couple of updates later did they add support for search. G+_Paul Werner
Seeing that the same swipe up motion that brings up Now on Tap in the M Preview I'm thinking that whatever you do on the GS6 to summon Google Now will bring up Now on Tap. Just a guess though?
G+_Gary Volk
One of the first things I disable once I root is that swipe up to launch Google now. It's so annoying when I am doing something and that gets triggered. Personally, I find very little use for now, it shows the weather and not much else. On my devices its a glorified search one that I can live without.
G+_Paul Werner
TwoBit Gary sounds like you don't let Google have enough info or you disabled too many cards to have it give you anything more useful than the weather card
G+_Adlai Allred
Yeah, there's no way I could have a phone, now, without Google Now. But I certainly understand why and how it could be useless for people who may not be as willing to share everything with Google.
G+_Gary Volk
Paul Werner I've removed it from my tablet, but it is still in my phone. Just checked phone and I see no settings to change, but I do remember seeing options on tablet. Adlai Allred? I don't know how to tell Google more than it already knows about me!
