G+_Lee Rothstein
Dan Slade In 1987, I had a DOS machine with a 20 MB disk, thanks to a friend that blew me custom PROMs. (No puns, please!) I was happy as a clam. I currently have a Win10 box with 32 GB of system RAM, and 8GB of Graphics adapter dual ported RAM. 40GB of RAM is more storage (including disk/drum), total, than the first 100 computers I ever used, had (in toto), including those by DEC (8, 12, 10, 11, Vax), IBM (11/30, 360), Burroughs (5500, 5700), HP (21MX), Imlac, XDS, Evans & Sutherland, Apple II, CPM Z80, Zenith DOS, Mac, IBM PC, .... One of the things I learned is that what you can store depends on the powers of K (1000, or 2^10) factor. For example: * When your storage is order 100 KB, all you can store is simple programs. * When your storage is order 10 KKB (MB), all you can store is programs and simple documents. * When your storage is order 10 KKKB (GB), all you can store is programs, documents, and simple multimedia files. * When your storage is order 10 KKKKB (TB), all you can store is programs, documents, and select multimedia files. * When your storage is order 10 KKKKKB (PB), all you can store is programs, documents, and all your multimedia ontent, including abandoning all paper files. ... In my home office, right now, I currently have ~16 TB of storage. That does not include the 2TB in my DVR, nor the 100GB on Google Drive, nor the stacks of data CDs and DVDs. In brief, the fourth law of thermodynamics: shit expands to take up all available space. In closets, disks, meeting time, etc. ;-)
