G+_Marlon Thompson
This was the year when Android Gaming stood out Jason Howell I know that you and the crew are not really gamers but I assume that you are going to talk about what stood out this year and I submit that this was the year for Android gaming. Not only did we see much higher quality big name games on the platform there was also an increase in same day launch on the 2 major mobile platforms as well as a shortening of the window between release for titles by smaller developers. Just today I was looking at Kotaku's best iphone and ipad games as well as the Verge's list (2 websites that play a lot of iOS games) and in the Kotaku list only one of the iphone games is not on android and in their iPad list 2 games are not on Android (Infinity blade well never come to Android so its really one) Similarly on the Verge its just one game that is not on Android. http://kotaku.com/the-12-best-games-on-the-iphone-5878819 , http://kotaku.com/the-12-best-games-for-the-ipad-5878797 , http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/25/5231290/best-iphone-ipad-games/in/5007535 This improvement was also helped by the fact that play games is far superior to Apple's gamecenter and I almost don't play a game that does not support it. More developers are integrating it into games allowing for cloud saves and achievements. At Google I/O Google also focused on highlighting the tools for devs to make bringing their games to Android easier, I would even say Humble Bundle had a role as I saw developers put out Alpha's and then final versions of a few of their games on some bundles as the money raised allowed them to complete their projects. Finally we had much better hardware this year and more Android users willing to spend money on apps. The majority of the revenue is still with the app store but 2014 was the year when many game developers realised they had to be on Android.
