G+_Demond Rice
I was just looking at a tear down for Google Play Services 4.4. In it they found code that points to Google updating the firmware using Play Services and the Play Store. This is most likely for Android Silver. It would be great if all Android device did this. I know it will piss off Verizon, but Verizon has not been playing fair or nice when it comes to Google. Verizon does not like the Nexus line or the Pixel. They promised to let you bring your Nexus 7, but kept it limbo. Then look at what just happened with the Pixel.
G+_David Campbell
Good, Verizon need to know that Google does not need them. Google saying play nice or get out of my way.
G+_Demond Rice
Andrew Melder I agree with the security patches and updates. The Android police tear down I read said that they should have the ability to update firmware also. I know that they have agreements with handset manufacturers and carriers. When those agreements end and have to be renegotiated. I am sure Google will fight to be able to release major firmware updates themselves. If it can be done with the Nexus line and Google Play edition phones why not all Android devices. Apple was smart enough to get this option when it made deals with carriers. Now that Android is so huge and popular. I can't see Google sitting back and allowing the fragmentation of Android to continue. The biggest problem that I hear about Android is the fragmentation problem. Once that is solved Apple really don't have any stones to throw at Google/Android.
