G+_Marc Kline
Always love the show. I have thought a few times that I'd love to hear a little less macro scale tech business news if it meant that I could hear a few more segments highlighting some of the more interesting smaller projects that may be game changers in the future. ... like how most national news programs throw in some less heavy, more localized stories to add another dimension to their shows. This is not criticism, and I don't know how many others would enjoy the same... just me saying "if this show was made with only me as the audience, here's how it might be different". I guess I can always "vote" for this style of programming in the subreddit.
G+_Zarthan South
I do agree. I wish there was less rehashing of everyone else's stories and some time spent on a feature, perhaps as you mentioned "localized stories".
G+_Marc Kline
It could be argued that the other shows on the network fill the space for less condensed, more substantial coverage, and I do appreciate that those shows allow the hosts to stray from what one might expect from the title of the show (see MacBreak Weekly and TWiG especially)... but maybe there is still be a space on the daily news show to skip or spend slightly less time on some of the lower hanging fruit in favor of some topics that require additional creativity to cover well. So, in a way, this input is a vote of confidence for the TNT team... They're striking on all cylinders in keeping us up to date on what's going on in the big-time tech world, and I think they'd also do a great job presenting some more understated stories in an insightful way that resonates with a wide audience. G+_Ken Fromchicago
Marc Kline You mean like if Tom Merritt, Sarah Lane and iyaz akhtar reported on an Undercovered Tech Story of the Week / Month? [i.e. a tech story they each found interesting but that hadn't gotten much coverage by much of tech news.]
G+_Tom Merritt
We have that built into the show. We each pick discussion stories based on what we think is interesting. News Fuse is for the top level, Discussion is for deeper dives. That's where I talk security or copyright or 3D printing, Iyaz will talk cool hardware and hacks and Sarah often brings in great startups, apps and social stuff. We also have Randomizer on purpose to do something fun offbeat and different. So it sounds like that's not quite enough for you. And this is always an issue of balance. We often get people complaining we covert too much of whatever is dominant at the time. Apple, smartphones, Google etc... But if we didn't cover that stuff people would abandon us for sources that di. So we try very hard to balance the show between delivering what is the buzzworthy dominant stories of the day for those who just want to keep up with what's grabbing headlines (news fuse) But also take some time to put stories in context and discuss their implications (discussions) and still keep it interesting with random stuff (Randomizer, Feedback)
G+_Marc Kline
Tom Merritt Thanks for the very thoughtful and well articulated answer. Let me reiterate that I enjoy the show very much and can't think of the last time I've missed a full episode - it is very valuable to me. One thing I love about the Internet is its rich bank of content covering a vast number of niche interests. TWiT is a great example, and it covers the tech niche and several niches inside of that niche very well. Some of those sub-niches appeal to me more than others, so I love the ability to drill down to the episode level in deciding what content I'd like to watch or listen to. The episode level is as far down on the chain as is possible for me to pick and choose what I want to engage in and ignore (barring the seek options for recorded content). That's pretty darn good. My feedback is only a mild effort to take one more step in asserting my particular interests. I know that mine don't necessarily match others', and I'm not trying to play armchair producer. My assertion is not about what would work better for the show so much as what would be ideal for me. Thanks again for considering it and responding... which points to another thing I love about the Internet and especially TWiT!
G+_Zarthan South
Tom Merritt Perhaps you could create custom versions of TNT for everyone. ;-) What I would like to see is perhaps the guest being one of the "in the field reporters" ( a Woodward or Bernstein ) who actually dug up the story. A Meet the Press flavor.
G+_derek ha
The balance is fine, don't change it. As they say in LA, " you're beautiful, don't ever change!'
G+_Marc Kline
The more I have thought about this, the more I tend to agree that the balance is fine. I personally would still like to see some more stories that cater to my particular interests, but I have the avenues to express those interests on reddit and Google+. Love the show!
