G+_Daniel Charles
Hey AAA Community, does anyone know of a SMS/texting app that uses wifi when it's available, but is capable of standard SMS when offline? I'm using Google Voice right now but, as I understand it, it uses 3G data as opposed to a simple SMS (no data connection necessary). Is this even possible? Do I not really understand the underlying technologies? Thanks in advance for any info!
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Daniel Charles, I'm not sure that's possible. The closest thing I can think of is ClockworkMod's TabletSMS and DeskSMS. But, as far as I know, both of them connect to your phone to send the SMS over cellular.
G+_Michael Ricci
Do you not have data on the phone?
G+_Daniel Charles
I do have data, but frequently am in an area where I don't (my provider's coverage isn't great in my area). I rely on wifi a lot but it's not always available either.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Mike Newman, that only works for receiving, not sending.
G+_S. LeBeau Kpadenou
Google voive sends and receives over data channel only. So if you are hooked to wifi, your sms will come thru wifi. I am sure of this behavior, as I use GV on my wifi only Nexus 7, and on old phones without SIM cards. Edit:just reread the question and realozed this is not the answer you were looking for. I don't know of such a thing. My Android programming knowledge tells me it should be possible, but definitely have to be done on purpose. Very edge case-y. ? G+_Joseph Cappellino
Mike Newman - Not sure about that, as I haven't tried it. I don't have a messaging plan with Verizon, so I use Google Voice (Gmail) exclusively. I know there is an option in the GV settings to forward to mobile phones, as well as a setting in the Android app that will also send to the stock messaging app. I was thinking of the latter. Your suggestion might actually work, though would cost me money. Try this out Daniel Charles.
G+_Daniel Charles
I'm on Sprint and have the integrated GV, so I'm not sure if it works the same as regular GV, I'll have to look around in settings to see if there is something I'm missing. Joseph Cappellino, Michael Ricci, Mike Newman, S. LeBeau Kpadenou Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. I suspect that what I was looking for doesn't exist, but we may have found a work around! If not, I'll survive until my contract expires. :-)
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Daniel Charles, since you are a Sprint customer with integrated GV, it should just work through the standard Messaging app. But, that's just an assumption on my part. Good luck!
G+_Chad Stieb
What I find hypocritical is how this relates to Ron Richards rant against T-Mobile and their insistence that they don't want to be in the ISP business, but then the carriers force apps like Google Voice to use the carrier's data plan even when WI-FI is available. G+_Wade Shields
Daniel Charles I too am a Sprint user, with Integrated GV. This will work, BUT, you must be using your GV number as your main number, not your Sprint number as your main number. That is the only way this works. .. Here's why? If you do it this way, when you send an sms from the GV app it shows your GV number and works on a data only connection (I just tested this by turning on Airplane mode to disable Sprint connection, and using the GV app to send an sms to my wife.) I also frequently turn off my data when I go into the movies (to save battery) but still send sms via standard connection from the stock messaging app. This only works because of Sprint's integration with GV. G+_Daniel Charles
Wade Shields, I can do that too. I was just hoping for a single sms app that works in both conditions instead of switching back and forth depending on my connection. Thanks for the suggestion though. G+_S. LeBeau Kpadenou
Chad Stieb I don't think that is true. I have GV on tmobile, and it works over wifi.
G+_Chad Stieb
S. LeBeau Kpadenou Unfortunately I'm on Verizon and GV connects through cellular data only. Realize there are apps out there as a work around, but it appears to be hit and miss based on the reviews.
