I've been hearing Leo Laporte make remarks for a while now about a patent troll, starting with Adam Carolla and more recently sounding like TWiT is now the focus of a Personal Audio lawsuit. Does anyone know if that's the case? Is there anything that we the TWiT Army can do to help?

I've been a huge fan since TWiT ep0, and can't imagine getting through the week without a my TWiT-fix. If there is something going on, and we can do anything, please let us know.

Yep, there's a company in TX claiming they were granted a patent in '12. The patent is regarding a “System for Disseminating Media Content Representing Episodes in a Serialized Sequence.” Apple lost a patent suit to Personal Audio LLC to the tune of $8 million in July of '11. Here's the best (and only) article I've been able to find describing the situation:

Obviously, we just have to hope that a court won't rule that a technology that's been in use for over a decade can't be limited by a patent granted last year. Crap.

I hope not, but then Apple won against Samsung despite prior art. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Apple guy all the way, but I didn't think Apple had that strong of a case. The point is, the Patent system is broken and all we can ask of the courts is to enforce a broken system as well as it can.

I think Leo is just being a little more cautious than usual. He spends money like a madman, but only on things he wants to spend money on. I doubt fighting off patent trolls is one of those things.
