I admit to never having held an iDevice with the fingerprint scanner personally, but it at least looks to be placed right for a thumb. I agree that it makes the lower edge bezel very large. And no the scanner is actually not taking up any real estate unless you're suggesting eliminating the home button, which has been right here in that space all along. Normally we hold our iPhones with our fingers wrapped around and grabbing the side. The placement is perfectly where we put our finger all the time. Thumbs work best for one-handed authentification.
