G+_Ruel Smith
Does this make anyone else unhappy? http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/13/8406229/apple-tv-15-percent-streaming-services
G+_David Pick
Why should a person be unhappy about this? Especially as a Netflix and Hulu Plus subscriber?
G+_Dave Trautman
This makes me very happy so my answer is no. Finally someone will break the producers out of jail and let them freely sell their wares to the highest bidder. Like the music business the contractual constraints of the cable providers was choking off competition and killing the little guy. Think of TV producers as geek app developers and you will get this. The App store provided a fairly seamless access point for finding new app developers and their new ideas. The Apple TV should be able to create a widely available smorg of individual producers selling into apps or channels which people could 'buy' individually. The number of producers I know who can't even get a meeting any more is growing bigger. The lock in with series TV is as bad as the lock in with doing 4 albums for a big label. Selling directly to the audience is possible now. With a 15% advantage to anyone who adopts the indie producer model we could be exposed to some pretty amazing content; which appeals to a narrower audience and therefore not appealing to cable networks. If those networks can be enticed to leave cable with more money in their pockets then Apple will break open the industry.
G+_Blake DeVoss
David Pick? Dave Trautman? My issue is that they aren't/may not be giving the same deal to smaller services. It seems anticompetitive to give such a discount to bigger vendors just because they're bigger. If TWiT offered a subscription service, do you think they would get a discount? G+_Dave Trautman
TWiT operates on a different model. There's no subscription with TWiT. Well, you can follow them on YouTube. TWiT is already on Apple TV for free. It's in the Podcast channel. You can't watch LIVE but all the programming is there for the choosing. If Apple TV offers us an app store option then we could get one of the many apps for watching LIVE and put it on our menu. I also think Apple TV will eventually allow for localization. In that local broadcast affiliate stations will be able to offer a 'watching app' you could pick from and put on your menu. Like with the iPad right now. For any subscription based network the revenue is locked in by the bundle/annual fee. If these network providers could be getting more cash for each subscriber through Apple TV than through other streaming services then the market shift could accelerate. If it was "a la carte" as such with individual video products bought like on iTunes, then we could find a whole new model for distribution of independent film. Right now I can buy most movies on iTunes at about what it might cost me to go down and see them in a crowd. It would be nice to have a "Sundance" channel where I could scroll through and buy or rent a viewing of a new film from their annual list (and back catalogue) thereby sending money directly to both the festival and the producer.
