"If you sit down to chat with a friend who has something important to talk about, and you decide to fiddle with your phone, it probably indicates more about your willingness to pay attention to your friend than it does about the Evil Plague of Zombie-Making Smartphones."

There is more to it than willingness only. While the older generations still remember the days without smartphones and good uninterrupted conversations with real friends, there are now whole younger generations that grew up with the the pavlovian conditioning of reacting to new messages. They do not talk to their friends anymore. They don't even call them. They only sent messages, even while they are sitting next to eachother.
