G+_john ferris
I question how a company can do this. I understand software maybe free but doing this without clear consent us wrong. uTorrent quietly installs a cryptocurrency miner on users' computers http://www.pcworld.com/article/2893982/utorrent-quietly-installs-a-cryptocurrency-miner-on-users-computers.html#tk.rss_all http://www.pcworld.com/article/2893982/utorrent-quietly-installs-a-cryptocurrency-miner-on-users-computers.html#tk.rss_all
G+_Blake DeVoss
There is no silent install. I just tried it. The first 'offer' that they give you is clearly labeled Epic Scale. You can select "Accept Offer" or "Decide Offer". These people just aren't paying attention. It's the same people who have 12 search toolbars on Internet Explorer. G+_john ferris
Blake DeVoss thank you for that confirmation. Out of curiosity does it clearly state what it will do if you accept?
G+_Blake DeVoss
The shorthand description says it will support charities (like AIDS research) by having your computer "solve math problems". There is a longer TOS in a scroll box on the same page that most likely is more specific. But I haven't read it.
G+_Stephen Styffe
I guess I'll have to stop using uTorrent. sigh I really liked uTorrent.
G+_Blake DeVoss
Steven Styffe you don't. This is no different than a toolbar installation. The majority of companies that provide free software (especially smaller ones) make deals with thirdparty apps. It's not new and it's extremely easy to opt out during installation. You have to be either illiterate or reckless to install this unintentionally.
G+_Stephen Styffe
Blake DeVoss I missed your first comment. That is very different from the headline. Sensationalist and misleading headlines are insulting.
G+_Rich Fowler
If you need to run a bittorrent client (for downloading those Linux distros) then I recommend Deluge. It's free and GPL licensed, so they're probably not going to stuff a toolbar in it anytime soon. Probably.
