G+_ian johnston
Recently got an S4 - opted to go for the $10/month device protection plan. Flash forward six weeks and I've smashed the screen at the beach! I have a replacement unit on the way and I'd like to backup everything on this one, and have it all magically appear on the new one, with my customizations, launcher, home screens,etc.. what's the best way to do this? I'm unrooted.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
You can try Helium Backup by ClockworkMod This won't backup your applications, but it will backup you application data.
G+_Scott Rose
Is there a way you can root it before sending back? I think the only way to get it all back the way it is today is a recovery backup. Think twrp, clockwork mod, etc.
G+_ian johnston
Scott Rose yea, i've got two weeks from when the new one arrives to send the old one back. i'm not opposed to it if that's the only way. i thought maybe there might be a way to do it with Kies or something similar though my instinct tells me to stay away from Kies altogether. alternatively, how much is restored automatically to a new phone via my google account.. other than the obvious contacts and calendars and mail and such, do my installed apps magically redownload, ala the iPhone? G+_Jacqueline Nehama
I can't think of anything that will recreate your setup without root. If you have given Google permission to back up your device the apps should download automatically once you sign into the new device. If you store your helium backup on the SD card of your original device, you can transfer it to the new S4 and reload data. You might like to use an app like App List Backup to make sure you get all the correct apps. You should take screenshots of your home screens to help restore them to their original look. I have found it goes much faster that way than trying to remember them. Unfortunately, root is required to backup the entire system and you would need to root the new device to load your back up. Hope this helps a bit .. You must be relieved that you had insurance!
G+_Scott Rose
If you want the experience to be the identical on the new phone then rooting and backup is the only way. If you go this route remember to save that backup in a place other than the phone.
G+_Wade Shields
Of you root now though, you wipe your phone anyways so that won't help. Joseph Cappellino is right, Helium is your best option.
G+_ian johnston
thanks everyone.. maybe it seems the simpler solution is just to make sure that my apps are synced via google, then just take screenshots of my home screens and recreate things. also, i have a 64 gb sd card that has a bunch of stuff on it via my current s4.. do you think i'll be able to pop that in the new one and not confuse anything? or perhaps i'll have to format. thanks for all your quick responses, the twit community is amazing

G+_Robert Carlos
If you're using Nova Launcher you can backup your current setup. It will save to SD. Then boot it up from your new device.
G+_Jeremy Baugh
Nova Launcher will import and backup your current launcher screen, and Helium backup will allow you to backup and restore WITHOUT root. Enjoy and best of luck!
G+_Jacqueline Nehama
Jeremy Baugh has a good point! I forgot. You can download Nova Launcher and it will import your screens from whatever launcher you were using. It even recreates most widgets. Then you can backup Nova to the SD card. NO ian johnston , should not need to format your SD card. If it can be read by your current device it will be fine. Just pop it in and all your data will be there.? G+_TJ Evans
Helium can save to PC w/o root I believe ... rooting allows saving to GDrive and cross-device sync through GDrive :).
