G+_Chris Harrison
I'm unclear as to which phones can create Photospheres? I'm looking at a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, but couldn't find the feature on a friend's phone? Is this purely a Nexus 4 feature??
G+_Johan Appelgren
Works fine on the Galaxy Nexus too. :)
G+_Chris Harrison
Thanks Johan Appelgren This is a killer feature I think.
G+_Alex L.
If I remember well it's an Android 4.2 feature, Note 2 is 4.1.2;
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Also, I have read somewhere that it is only available for Nexus devices. So, even the Note 2 (which I love) running CyanogenMod 10.1 still doesn't have it.
G+_Michael Honey-Arcement
It's a 4.2 feature. Gotta wait for OTA updates to trickle in.
G+_Aaron Weintraub
Its a nexus phone feature. The manufacturers replace the android camera with their own.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Even non-Nexus devices running Android 4.2 via CyanogenMod do not have this feature. Google, for some reason, disabled this feature.
G+_Keith Nelson
Really? I would think that since the camera is a part of the standard google apps package that the feature set would be the same across phones. You're saying they coded it in to the camera app to check your hardware and disable features if it's not a nexus phone? Interesting...
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Yeah. The more I look into it, it seems it's only the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4.
G+_Michael Honey-Arcement
Only the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4 officially have 4.2 as well. We won't really know until The Galaxy SIII gets 4.2. The CM 10.1 for the Note 2 is still in nightly so it could be a driver issue with getting photosphere to work. There was a 4.2 camera apk floating around that had the photosphere feature but idk how well it performed.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
I saw that as well, but I'm pretty sure that still didn't enable photosphere, even on the Nexus S 4G. It's probably some web service Google is running to validate which devices can use it. Not sure, as I haven't looked at the code. And, if it were just something code-based, I'm sure CM would have enabled it on all devices.
G+_Keith Nelson
Sounds like a long way to go to disable it... hopefully the community gets it up and running for any device with adequate hardware in the near future.
G+_Will Chase
its already up and running for rooted galaxy note II's using this MOD This is the Verizon Note 2 link, but there should be APKs for all carriers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032248 Also this is the google search I used: "site:forum.xda-developers.com xda-developers.com camera 4.2 galaxy note II"
G+_Joseph Cappellino
I'll check it out and post back on my findings.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
The Good: Photosphere works! The Bad: Pictures taken with the flash (either on or auto) will force close the app. But, it installs along side the original app, so you can use the original for flash photography and the stock app for everything else. G+_Joseph Cappellino
Thanks Will Chase for the heads up!
G+_Will Chase
Yes it runs alongside the normal camera app, so you will have two camera apps and two galleries. The flash is a big issue, however there is a workaround. If you tap the screen, you can see the UI react as the camera auto-focuses. IF you immediately snap the photo while the camera is auto-focusing, it won't force close on you. Its hard to explain in text but its pretty consistent once you get the hang of it. G+_Chris Harrison
Appreciate the input. It's very confusing. Google has been touting this feature and one would think that the latest and greatest Samsung phones would support it. I'm seriously considering the Note 2 on Verizon, and if I have to hack to make Photosphere work, so be it! :)
G+_Chris Sucharda
You have to remember those manufactures have there own camera software. Unless Google opens up the apk so other manufactures can use it don't see it happening. Nexus branded hardware is the only way to role. No dealing with carrier and manufactures bs and get googles toys first
G+_Chris Harrison
That's true +Chris Sucharda , but I'm stuck on Verizon right now. At&t didn't have good coverage @ my home.
