Greg Busby - I transferred my number to Google Voice about 2 years ago (just before they got rid of Unlimited Data on Verizon).  But, I am not, nor have I ever been a big SMS/MMS user.  I send maybe 10-20/month.  I do most of my conversations on Hangouts.

That being said, the Hangouts rumors are great!  They will easily handle all of your messaging needs...on your mobile line.  None of the information yet has said that it will also include MMS support for Google Voice.  I'm really hoping this will come to fruition, but I'm not banking on it, yet.

So, my advice is wait to see what the announcement brings.  If Hangouts supports MMS for Google Voice, jump on it.  If not, I'm afraid you're stuck using it as your voicemail only.

Greg Busby I agree, the biggest pain for me when I was still on iOS was telling people which number to send me what and how to call me when...

The phone calls were pretty easy, just use the GV number and I set it up to ring the phone, but texting was always a pain.  Many of my more technical friends could get it, but not nearly everyone.

I am truly hoping for a #googlevoice  update but I'm not holding my breath.  More likely it will just be shut down like everything else at Google nowadays...

I ported my home number to Google Voice and the process was quite simple. It was a multi-step process though. Home Number -> Prepaid T-Mobile -> Google Voice.

I have another GV number I use exclusively for texting. It's sometimes a challenge because it lacks MMS but rarely do people send me photos. Group texting doesn't seem to work either. But I refuse to pay $10 a month for texting. That's just crazy.
