G+_Andrew McGlashan
Listened to TWiG this week and the line between TWiG and AAA is about the same as the line between Android and chrome OS anymore, so I'm posting here ? The thoughts about how chrome and Android could work together were brought up and I think there is a pretty simple solution. Stay with me here. So if Chrome OS and Android are both based on Linux they have to be somewhat similar at the root level. Chrome OS is just a chrome browser with its own dedicated storage. If Windows 8 now can run two versions/frontends of Chrome (desktop or metro/chrome OS looking version) why can't there be a chrome browser built for Android that does the same thing, just have the mobile/chrome OS appearance available? With more mobile devices being released with +2gb of ram, and that is the minimum with chrome OS, this should be possible. I can picture a re-released Nexus 10 that when docked with a keyboard dock or paired with a Bluetooth keyboard chrome would launch in a chrome OS/desktop chrome environment. Best of both worlds. 10" tablets are not unheard of and I always see students jn my school docking iPads. I'd they build the same ability into iOS, they could theoretically give iPad users the ability to use their devices as a chrome OS device I'd they want. It appears to be just a frontend. Why argue chrome OS vs. Android if they are all Linux based. Can't we all just get along?
G+_Joseph Cappellino
There's more to it than just the kernel, but I understand what you're saying. Really, the next step is to have a full version of Chrome on Android, including extensions and Chrome/HTML5 apps. From there, you can do basically what you're asking. G+_George Garrett
If they can write the desktop version for windows and Linux, it seems it should be possible for Android
G+_Joseph Cappellino
George Garrett kinda. Those apps run in a windowed environment, whereas they run in a virtual machine on Android. It's definitively possible, it's just a different beast than the desktop version.
G+_L I
IIRC ChromeOS is more than just a Unix core, it's basically a highly customized version of Debian. I've tried Android x86 on my old Dell Mini laptop and it was not pretty. For ChromeOS and Android to coexist they'll have to, among other things, refine how the mouse and keys work - like changing the precision with which mouse clicks are registered. Currently in Android mouse clicks have the same precision as finger touches which makes the mouse useless for dense UIs. And vice versa, Chrome is about as bad for touch as those 7" Windows tablets.
