G+_David Herron
Any parents on here who have figured out a good solution for kids having their own device? We're looking into getting a simple, wifi only android device for my kids so that they can basically just listen to music, play around with the camera, etc. They're under 13 so can't have their own Google account, but I would really prefer that they not use mine because it will mess up my music algorithms, flood my photo backups with their selfies, etc. Any insight? G+_Corey Fields
Sorry, I wasn't asking for advice on which device to get but how to work account sign in. I don't want them to use my account but their too young to have their own.
G+_Michael ONeal
How about setting up a second account for yourself and giving your kids access to that?
G+_Dan Scott
I totally get your concern over algorithms getting messed up! My kids are set up on a tablet with a restricted account. My account is the primary; they only get access to whatever apps I grant permissions to for their restricted account. However, the downside is that for a setup like that, Play Music with a family account is not an option; it would have to be stored locally or stream over Plex or the like. G+_Saifee Akil
On any android device running 6 or above, you can set a restricted user local profile on the device itself and grant permissions to apps etc. The only problem would be any file sharing because even downloaded content is not accessible cross profiles unless it is downloaded into their user profile specifically. G+_Corey Fields
Saifee Akil yes, we use that on our tablet, but the one drawback there is that they are still using my account on apps like Google Music, etc.
G+_Saifee Akil
Corey Fields unfortunately I don't see any way around that. As someone above mentioned, best way would be for you to create another account and use the family sharing feature.
G+_Leon LaSpina
More and more schools are using Google Apps for education. In that case, a kid can associate their Google Apps login with their device. Google classroom keeps getting better and better.
G+_Corey Fields
L. LaSpina I've been told it can't be used on any other device.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Corey Fields the age restriction of a guideline, as they don't verify the birthday. As such, I created accounts for all my daughters (ages 7, 5, and 10 months) and set up the family plan for each of them. Also, by using Nova Launcher, I can hide apps I don't want them to have access to.
