To answer Shannon's first question, no, Perl was not intended for web use, for the simple reason that it pre-dates the web by several years. Larry created it as a more powerful awk, useful for taking textual data from many sources and compiling textual reports from that data in an easier way. That just happens to be useful for dealing with web pages and forms as well.
