G+_George Fromtulsa
AN OPEN "NOTE" to SAMSUNG You recently started geo-locking your phones. I presume because the realities of world trade mean your products sell for more in some nations than others, and you don't want the low priced gear being sold "grey market+ in countries where you can charge more. Today's story is that you've decided to copy Apple, again, and use chip locks to control sale of accessories for your phones. Now keeping folks from buying faux Samsung labeled batteries that explode is a good thing, though there's a better way than chip-locks. Make it easy for your customers to buy OEM batteries! I've owned two of your Galaxy Nexus phones. When I bought the first one, which I gave to my son-in-law, I purchased two Samsung brand extended life batteries with plastic "doors" when I bought the phone. When I bought the second, for myself, extended batteries were nowhere to be found through traditional channels. I bought from an eBay seller (honest guy) who exported them to the US from Korea where I presume he could pick 'em up at the Korean equivalent of Radio Shack. I'd have much rather bought from Amazon, or Best Buy, or the Samsung USA web site . . . Then there's my Galaxy Note. Back when it was an object of derision, I had to have one. It is still my daily driver. Fast, beautiful screen, and I kept right on using it through all the jokes about holding a cookie sheet to my head to make phone calls. Mine came grey market from Germany. The more I used it, the more my friends and people who noticed me using it "on the street" wanted one. Thus sales are made. But if you had geo-locked it to Germany, meaning a dealer there couldn't export it to me here in Oklahoma, I and other adopters of the Note couldn't have helped you sell it. Anyone at home,? Resist whatever urge is driving your company to make bad decisions that anger consumers, deprive them of a vibrant market in innovative third party accessories, and have the effect of reducing the impact of products Samsung makes that folks like me are willing to take a chance on, and it is an expensive chance.
