My Thoughts on WWDC Keynote

TL;DR: I like where Apple is headed, I'm just nowhere near buying.

So, of course, you'll read everywhere that Apple is still copying Google/Android.  And they're right.  But, I see them taking steps in the right direction.

From a developer (and a self-professed Google fanboi), what Apple did today was huge.  *HUGE*!  Yeah, OSX (really?!?  We're still on version 10?) has a nice update (for free), and they added some nice backend stuff to iOS, but the extensibility is much farther reaching.

For years, I've been touting that Android allows greater customization.  And, come the fall... it still will.  That being said, the ability to override the stock keyboard, add widgets to the Notification Center, as well as provide app sharing contexts is huge.  Granted, it's still behind Android in most extents, but does provide, what looks like, a more cohesive UX.

They still haven't fix the real deal breaker for me.  A default call handler.  I use Google Voice exclusively.  For me to have to context switch to make a call, is not something I'm willing to give up.

Also, by creating a new programming language, while cool, I would have to work with it before I make any judgements.  If it makes my life as a developer truly better (with fewer downstream issues like memory management and debug utilities), then I'm all for it.  But, from what I know about Objective-C, this is a good thing.

The Android bashing was a bit much.  Derek Ross caught them using stale data.  As Koushik Dutta brought up, "~65MM people switched from Android to iPhone. Damn," but I think that was mostly in China (until the iPhone 6/5C, you couldn't buy a "real" iPhone in China).  While impressive, I believe the number of people choosing Android over iOS is growing in the US.  I know a bunch of people that have switched to Android in the last year.

Finally, Tim Cook brought up that no one provides the same "continuity" that they will provide in the fall.  I would have to disagree, at least to some extent.  Google has a great stack for their services: Google Services; Android with Nexus; Chrome/ChromeOS and Chromebooks/Chromeboxes.  While ChromeOS may be limited in "full" features and the Nexus Program doesn't have a large user base, all of these tie directly into Google's services extremely well.

So, basically, I really like where Apple is headed, but I'm even more excited to see what Google brings to the table come the end of June!

PS - I'm sure this will be buried with everyone else clamoring for clicks!
