I liked reading this article

I liked reading this article. Another Android user here that really doesn't care how people want to reach me or what they prefer to be reached on. I use Hangouts and love that you can have a read receipt if you are using IM or SMS (face showing position they last read with IM and a check mark if an SMS was viewed).

iPhone elitism is just stupid. Nobody cares what phone you prefer and tweets about it doesn't make it any more valid.

(mostly copied my comment on the article itself, haha)

Johan Appelgren - Android and iOS aren't the only platforms.  There is also extensions/apps for Chrome, which is supported by Windows, Linux and OSX.  The only people truly affected by this are Windows Phone and Blackberry.  Currently, they are too insignificant to develop for.

That being said, once Windows 10 is "everywhere", I'm sure it would be fairly trivial to make a Hangouts Windows app that works anywhere Windows 10 is available.

Joseph Cappellino? Sure, but then I'd have to use Chrome which historically hasn't worked well on laptops due to bad timer resolution design (caused unnecessary battery drain) and other issues.?

We'll see what happens with Windows 10, Google has after all worked really hard at not supporting Windows Phone. And writing apps that work on both Windows and Windows Phone is afaik possible already.

Johan Appelgren, and I use Chrome everywhere (my laptop is a Chromebook), so it's not a big deal for me.

They are possible, but it's the same with Windows 8.  The market penetration of Windows 8 is still very low compared to Windows 7, so there would still have to be two versions (which isn't worth it, yet).  Windows 10, from what I hear, is leaps and bounds better than Windows 7.

I'd argue that Windows in general is garbage and overpriced. I only use it because gaming demands it still. I quit using Windows for 2 years and switched to Ubuntu and was very happy with it. Only reason I'm not still using it is because wine was giving me fits with some of the newer games at the time.

Johan Appelgren - I think Windows 8 is better for touch-enabled devices, where Windows 7 is better for desktops (keyboard and mouse).  From what I hear, Windows 10 bridged the gap between the two rather nicely.

And, history shows that every other version of Windows is good, and the other bad:

Windows 1: Good

Windows 2: Was that even a thing?

Windows 3/3.11: Good

Windows 95: Not so much

Windows 98: Good

Windows 98Me: Awful

Windows XP: Excellent

Windows Vista: Don't even go there

Windows 7: Awesome-sauce

Windows 8: Meh (best on touch devices)

Windows 10: Early results say it's good.

Generally, it comes down to major changes that weren't really vetted out.  Win3.11 to Win95 brought a cohesive desktop, but had many issues in usability.  Win98Me was mostly an underlying change incorporating a lot of NT technology into Win98 (but it caused many issues).  XP to Vista brought about the first major UI/UX change since Win95.  Win8 brought the metro/modern UI/UX to the desktop.  Again, this was great for touch-enabled devices, yet awkward and unwieldy on desktops.
