I use another home launcher (home screen interface) to deal with the home screen icons being too large. And the reason why I don't like TouchWiz as a home launcher. TouchWiz stretches (enlarges) the size of all icons. TouchWiz also doesn't give you the room for many icons. If you think the icons are big on Galaxy S4 TouchWiz, then you can only imagine how big icons get on Galaxy Note 2 TouchWiz.

I use ADW launcher Ex on my Galaxy Note 2. But there are more home launchers like Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher, Go Launcher Ex, etc...

Within the the home launcher of your choice go to the launchers settings. Then to screens settings. Then add more desktop columns (I like 4 icons across) and add more desktop rows (I like 5 icons down). That should give you more room and smaller the icon size at the same time.

I also use Home Switcher/Manager by Twisted Apps to switch between different home launchers and set the default launcher. This way you can try different home launchers to see which one you like best.

And if that is not enough information. Some home launchers, like ADW Launcher Ex, will allow you to change the size of icons on your home screen. Within the the home launcher of your choice go to the launchers settings. Then go to icon settings. Within icon settings there is icon size settings that you change icon's size. Also within icon settings you can can change to show or not to show the icon text, change the size of icon text, change the color of icon text, and more.

You can also use widget apps too. I use "Folder Organizer" widget app to organize my apps. But it will also give you a widget of your contacts. I created a label (group) of favorite contacts. Then created a 1 by 4 size (1 icon down by 4 icons across) widget with favorite contacts. You can change the size of the contact icons within the widget so that more contacts can fit. Just another idea.

Android is about exploring, discovering, creating, and customizing, the way it works for you. ?

I just tried Elixir 2 and Elixir 2 Widgets. It works like you described that you are looking for. Try Elixir 2 and Elixir 2 Widgets by Tomas Barta. This widget app says it does contacts with small icons.
