G+_Alfredo Suarez
I don't understand why some people seem to feel they need iMessage. Literally no one here uses it. However even if you are in an area where it is common, it's a terrible chat system (security is broken and allows man in the middle attacks). Using SMS is also very backwards, I can't name someone who uses this form of communication anymore. Currently the things that everyone seems to be using are Messenger, WhatsApp and Hangouts. The latter may be just for my group but the other two are ubiquitous.
G+_Chris Harpner (CSharpne
Everyone I know uses SMS. Don't misinterpret that as an endorsement of SMS from me though! ;)
G+_Amanda Manning
Everyone I know, including me, uses SMS still mostly because it's pre-installed and everyone has it. I honestly don't personally know anyone who doesn't primarily use SMS.
G+_Chris Harpner (CSharpne
I don't know of anyone locally that uses WhatsApp. Hangouts is popular here.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
I rarely use SMS. I mostly use Hangouts.
G+_Coco Davis
If you want to send a picture or video iMessage is much better than sms or hangouts. I've heard what's app is better too. I use hangouts personally but sometimes it drives me nuts.
G+_Pradyumn Vij
Coco Davis what do you qualify as "better", I can't use iMessage. I've never run into issues with Hangouts for photos. I agree SMS is useless for media. I do know that iMessage is broken if you want secure messages (as packets are encrypted then signed, rather than the reverse which is known to any computer science student). G+_Coco Davis
Pradyumn Vij depending on which phone I'm using, hangouts all compresses the photos. So I'll send a great picture and someone will get it fuzzy or pixelated and then I'll have to email it. That's a pain in the ass. Doesn't happen all the time but enough they it's annoying. On iMessage That problem doesn't exist. I'm hoping with Allo some of my hangouts issues will be fixed. We shall see. But I've been using it since launch, so it's definitely my preferred service. G+_Chris Harpner (CSharpne
Update: I've switched wholly to the texting app "Signal". It includes texting, images, video, VOIP calls, video calls, and important for my family exiting hangouts... Group chat. And most importantly, 100% of that is encrypted as long as all parties in a conversation have turned on that privacy feature. As a side benefit, it can communicate without encryption with anyone using regular texting... And, you don't even have to be using Signal to communicate with Signal users to have an encrypted conversation... As long as all parties are using a compatible encrypting app. The encryption is end to end, zero knowledge encryption... That's the most secure kind. Not even the "Signal" servers can decrypt it.
