If you are using GrooveIP I recommend that you also check out Talkatone. The app is really a really janky copy-paste from their iPhone app but in my experience it works better with the default settings. When I was using GrooveIP I had to fiddle with the settings often. On the other hand I was using a satellite Internet connection so YMMV. GrooveIP will always use your GVoice number when you dial out.

Just to clarify: you can call and answer GVoice calls via your cell number but that burns minutes. If you use an app like GrooveIP you can call and answer GVoice calls over voip which may use cell data but do not use minutes. GVoice can route calls through GChat which allows you to take calls using any GChat client that can do voice chat. Which is what GrooveIP and Talkatone are. Hope that cleared out up for you.

Good on you if you can get by with 100 minutes. Don't give it up though because that plan is only for new customers. If you switch, you can't go back. My wife and I were in monthly 4g for a few months. 2 phones unlimited was $140. Switched to the new Simple Choice and it's $120 with 500mb tethering each phone included

The only truly unlimited high speed data (no throttling) T-Mobile plan is the Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan. Just to let you know.

With the other Unlimited data plans from T-Mobile you get throttled after X amount of data usage.

Other than that the Unlimited call/text plans for T-Mobile are truly unlimited USA calling and texting.

FYI - The tethering is limited with all T-Mobile data plans. But that is true with every single carrier, including Sprint. ?

GrooVe IP works fine with me as long as I have good Wifi speeds or good cellular data service speeds. But Google is going to integrate Google Voice with Hangouts. When Google does that it may break the VoIP apps like GrooVe IP that uses Google Voice.

A truly sound option for VoIP is Skype. Though it costs a little for your own Skype phone number and the ability to give & receive telephone calls. But the price is very little. The only downside is that you need to be connected to a good Wifi speeds or good cellular data service speeds to use Skype.

FYI - All VoIP services and apps uses large amount data (not as much as video or video conferencing, but still eats away at the data usage). So you have to think about that when considering the cellular data plan.

At the long run VoIP costs more due to cellular data usage when not using Wifi (or won't work after X amount of cellular data usage due to throttling), than just going for unlimited call/text plan and Unlimited Nationwide 4G (high speed) Data plan at T-Mobile. Or just don't talk much. Basically using VoIP on cellular data plan to save money is not the best idea.

But if you only want to use your device as a home phone and you have Wifi at home or calling to the states with Wifi when traveling outside of USA then this is a good money saving idea. ?
