G+_Dave Mac
So I looked into an S III and saw Walmart had it for $40 w/2yr renewal! (Costco wants $100 and Verizon $200, both w/renewal.) HOWEVER, Walmart said Verizon would probably make me lose my unlimited data plan!! I haven't checked w/Costco or directly w/Verizon yet. Can anyone advise how to keep my unlimited data plan? Have you had one experience or another?
G+_Robert Hendrix
Buying outright is the only way. Any change to your actual bill results in you losing it.
G+_Shawn Co
Drop big red and go t-mobile :-)
G+_Alika Larsen
I was able to keep my unlimited on my s3 upgrade because I was due for an upgrade. This was due largely to the fact the sales girl knew how to work the system. She was also not a direct Verizon sales person, but a 'premium Verizon' reseller. The general policy is to not grand-father in unlimiteds, but the system still allows it. Honestly though if I did't get unlimited, I would've dumped big red. G+_Stephen Styffe
Shawn Co Yeah - except that T-Mobile's coverage sucks in many rural areas. But I hear that their 3G network is excellent in comparison to Verizon or AT&T because nobody uses T-Mobile. And David Gershman the only way to avoid losing the plan is by buying the device unsubsidized (no 2 year contract). It's expensive, but it's the only option that allows you to maintain your unlimited data.
G+_Warren Kerr
Hold out until May and see what Google I/O brings, I am the same position as you, currently using a galaxy nexus and out of contract but hoping will announce a nexus that will run LTE on Verizon. G+_David Gershman
How does buying it outright work? I just move my SIM card or do I still need to go into Verizon?
G+_Jay-Ar Pinero
You have to buy unsubsidized from now on to keep unlimited data plan.

G+_Bjørn-Eivind Kvam Netla
I would not have a 2 year contract with an S II now, that phone will be really old in a year already.

G+_Joseph Cappellino
David Gershman - I recently got a Note 2 on Verizon using the upgrade price and kept my unlimited data. Caveat - I had to add a third line to my plan using an an old Motorola RAZR flipphone. Over 2 years it'll cost me $540, versus $700 outright. G+_George Baker
David Gershman Steven Styffe Jay-Ar Pinero are correct. Verizon policy is that you upgrade you have to change from the unlimited data plan. If you have a legacy voice plan you don't have to go to shared data though. You can go with the 2GB for $30. However, like Joseph Cappellino mentions there are ways around that restriction using an add a line but you would have to decide if it was worth the cost. The rep in the comment by Alika Larsen likely cost herself or her store a good bit of money. Carriers will often not pay commission to the rep (or the store for non-commission companies like Walmart & Best Buy) when the proper features aren't added to a upgrade or new line purchase.
