G+_Juan Carlos Jiménez Cab
Is there an advantage (or disadvantage) of buying an unlocked phone from a 3rd party instead of your carrier? Where do you get updates -- still from your carrier; from the manufacturer; not at all? What if the phone is a variation and not the sub-model the carrier sells? G+_Chris
I bought multiple unlocked phones they'll get updated through maker
G+_Brian Helman
Do they get updated any faster .. either Android "flavor" or security patches? Specifically, I'm talking about the LG V20 990DS for use on AT$T.
G+_Chris
Brian Helman? LG is pretty good about it and I believe v20 is already running latest os
G+_Brian Helman
Well, I mean when O comes out and the monthly security patches (which have become quarterly for my current phone). With the V30 about to be released, the V20 is getting very inexpensive. I have the G4 and it's getting a little tired. I travel a lot, so the replaceable battery is a huge plus for me. If a V20 can get me through another 12-16 months, hopefully the next gen of phones will have battery life that doesn't make me cringe. If I didn't want to use the phone the way I WANT to use the phone (which drains the battery), I'd use an iPhone.
G+_bil Jeschke
The phones get updated from the carrier they were made for, but unlocked tend to be delayed after the locked versions from my limited experience using Sprint phones on Ting.
G+_Brian Helman
bil Jeschke, so where would an international phone get its updates? Again, talking about the LG V20 990DS.

G+_Dale Dubnyk
Carrier will most always be delayed. Updates get released from Google, who then releases them to the manufacturers. Manufacturers then work on it, and then release it to the unlocked phones, and also hand that off to the carrier's. The carrier's then do their who the fuck knows what to it, "certifying and testing," and take months, and then push it out to the devices.
G+_John “NotSo” Bright
I would check the OEM site. I have seen LG , motorola and Samsung have them online. Samsung and LG have software online to help.
G+_Cass Morrison
Brian Helman?? I have a S8 from Samsung in Canada and get my updates from Samsung before the carrier wave of updates. I've heard in the US they lag behind so there's perhaps a deal. My international S6 also got updated by Samsung, in that case months before Canadian carriers. LG would be the same, direct updates.
