G+_James Clayton
Does anyone know what is going on with Google Drive storing your photos? My phones photos aren't in my google drive and I thought they were going to start storing there.
G+_Chris Clark
It's under the Google Photos section of Drive. In the mobile app it's in the slide out menu.
G+_James Clayton
why doesn't it show as a folder in my google drive application on my desktop?
G+_James Clayton
I think i found the answer to my question. I see Google Photos in the Menu of the Android App, wh/ lead me to go to drive.google.com and see if they were in the cloud. I saw the option to add a folder to google drive. I'm trying that now. G+_James Clayton
Great! Now I have a folder on my PC too, thanks for leading me in the right direction.
G+_Robert Blank
They don't actually appear in a folder in drive. They show up in their own section within drive. Personally, I don't see the advantage to having a view into photos from the drive app if it's not access to the actual file system of the photos. G+_James Clayton
From what i've been reading they take the photos to the cloud and leave a thumbnail on the phone. then when you click on it it downloads the picture. This makes sense in a way. I'd prefer the whole copy surfable through my file system. But I retain a copy through the samsung dcim gallery. G+_Robert Blank
James Clayton All of this would make sense to me if there wasn't a dedicated Photos app. In my humble opinion, having access to the same content through multiple points like this has the tendency to add a lot of unnecessary complexity. If I have the Drive app and the Photos app installed on my device, what benefit does accessing photos in Drive really offer me? If I had no intention of ever installing the Photos app, then accessing photos in Drive would make much more sense. I prefer the Unix philosophy of having many smaller tools that are each good at doing only one thing instead of an overly bloated tool that tries to be too many things. G+_James Clayton
Robert Blank I agree. For me it is a specific goal to be able to drop photos from my pc into my google drive and have it collect to Google Photos. I'm a photographer so this seemed liked a good solution to transfer around. But Google Photos isn't perfect. There are like a thousand photos from my phone camera (DCIM) that aren't backed up to the cloud. Google has a lot of work to do. There are no options and way to tweak it. But it's not meant for power users.
G+_Robert Blank
James Clayton I don't have Drive actually installed on my computer since I always work from the browser. Does drive let you sync photos that way and have them show up in Google Photos? If it works that way, maybe I'll consider installing it.
G+_James Clayton
Robert Blank Give me a little time and i'll write up a summary of my experience with it. I had 7GB of photos in my Google Drive this morning, but now it has jumped to 13GB so it is still syncing. My goal is to drop into the photos folder in Google Drive on the PC and have it in my Google Photos cloud. Will let you know when I have more info. I'm new to it, so i'm learning the features. G+_Robert Blank
James Clayton When Google added Photos in Drive a few months ago, I was intrigued. I felt that having Photos built on top of Drive made more sense then having it as part of Google+. The problem I have with it is that the way Drive is connected to Photos seems very inconsistent. My view of my photos continues to show me photos that I've deleted in the Photos app days ago. The earliest photos I see from Drive only go back as far as March. That kind of inconsistency is my main reason for not using it. If I don't get a complete and accurate representation of what's there, then why should I access it that way? That's not the only inconsistency. Google+ still has a view into Photos. When I access photos from there, I see many obscure albums that I neither explicitly created nor have access to from the Photos app. When these separate views into what is supposed to be the same data fails to reconcile, it becomes confusing and finding stuff becomes a big chore. Nevertheless, I'll be interested to read about your experiences with Photos in Drive.
